Sheet Pile Corner Sections (Clutch Bars / Connectors)
Sheet pile corner sections, also known as clutch bars, interlocks, or connectors, are rolled steel components used to connect sheet piles, steel pipes, and H-beams. They play a key role in forming continuous retaining structures and combined wall systems.
Structural Function & Connection Types
Corner sections are designed to connect different structural elements:
- Sheet pile to sheet pile
- Sheet pile to steel pipe
- Sheet pile to H-beam
- Pipe to pipe connections
👉 Interlocks must match the sheet pile system to ensure proper engagement and load transfer.
Manufacturing & Types
Corner sections are produced using both hot rolling and cold forming technologies:
- Hot rolled clutch bars
- Cold formed corner sections
All connectors are manufactured with high precision to ensure low interlock friction and repeat usability.
Hot Rolled Clutch Bars
Hot rolled clutch bars are widely used for connecting Larssen, AZ, Hoesch and other standard sheet piles, including:
- PU / AU sheet piles
- Japan Type II, III, IV
- IIW / IIIW / IVW
Common profiles include:
- C9 / C14 / C6
- Delta 13
- Omega 18
- E20 / E21 / E22
C9 and E22 are the most widely used types, especially for pipe-to-sheet pile connections.
Cold Formed Corner Sections
Cold formed corner sections are used for cold formed sheet piles and offer high flexibility:
- Can be produced at any angle
- Custom connectors available (ANY-Z, CF90, CF Tee)
- Compatible with C9 / E22 systems
Typical products include:
- GPC9 / GPC14 / GPC13 / GPC18
Material & Performance
Corner sections are typically manufactured from the same steel grade as sheet piles, most commonly S355GP. High manufacturing precision ensures:
- Minimal interlock friction
- Smooth installation and extraction
- Multiple reuse cycles
Installation Method
Installation process includes:
- Thread connector into sheet pile interlock
- Adjust to correct position
- Weld connector to sheet pile (typically 250mm weld at top)
- Proceed with normal driving or extraction

Engineering Importance
Although global demand for clutch bars is relatively small (~5000 tons/year), they are critical components in the steel piling industry. Without proper connectors, sheet pile systems cannot function effectively.
